(the bean pickers union)
Chuck Melchin is a familiar face in the vibrant roots scene around Cambridge and Somerville, Massachusetts, having spent the last 20 years there writing, recording and performing music with his “loose collective” of musicians he calls the Bean Pickers Union. The lineup of the band is as varied as the music he creates - at times an acoustic string band with fiddle, mandolin and upright bass, other times a plugged in telecaster-driven alt.country rock band. His music explores the darker side of Americana, telling stories of failing family farms, a widow struggling with denial, or of a man driving the route of the Appalachian Trail to scatter his friend’s ashes after his suicide. The Bean Pickers Union has performed regularly across New England, with Chuck doing occasional solo tours in the midwest, California, Colorado and the UK.
